How To Train A Dog In Family Protection Work

We like to think our dogs will protect our families. To some extent, it is true that dogs have instincts to protect their owners, however, some dogs are specifically trained as protection dogs. We will be discussing how to train a dog in family protection work. This task is not a simple one.

The dogs must have certain qualities. They must have the highest mental stability. They must also have excellent endurance. They have to be able to stay alert. They also have to be able to be around both children and adults with no problem.

First off the trainer must watch the dog. The trainer must be able to tell how the dog will react when family or the trainer is threatened. If the dog reacts as the trainer thinks it should then it can move on to level one at the training school. The dog must not be easily excitable or nervous. If they are then the trainer will not recommend that they move on to level one at the training school.

The dogs need to be able to learn to come on command and not run around. If they randomly run around and are very excited this could pose a danger to the dog, owner or someone else. Upon completion of the training program not only are they wonderful protection dogs, but they are also wonderful companions because they will obey the commands given.

After the dogs have been observed, they either pass on or are weeded out. Those who pass move on to the training levels. There are three levels or phases that the dogs go through. One is tracking. The second is obedience. The third is protection. Each level of phase has different purposes for the trainer and for the dog.

Anyone who wants to can participate in various dog protection training programs. Usually this is volunteer work and is for your personal benefit as well as benefiting the dogs. You will be taught how to train a dog in family protection work. Or if you volunteer to take a dog that has been weeded out you will probably receive training tips for your new companion.
